Measuring exposure to electromagnetic radiation ( EMR ) or Electromagnetic Energy ( EME ) is a highly specialised field of expertise and requires equipment that is specifically geared to measure within the frequency range of the source of EMR. It is very important that the professional measuring the radiation or energy exposure is trained and has a good understanding of this field.

Electromagnetic radiation that affects all of us in our daily lives can originate from many different sources. As a very general rule if the device is wireless or even just has wireless capabilities (even though you are not using them) there is a chance that emr is being emitted.

The most common sources of EMR are:

Mobile phone base stations (often also referred to as phone masts or phone towers)

Cordless phones

Mobile phones

Wireless entertainment units and speakers

Wireless Internet

Wireless Wii games

Wireless systems in cbus or so called smart homes

Every site and every different room or place on the site will have different exposure levels as there are many things that influence and change the exposure level from a given source. Distance from the source, buildings and or materials in between the source and the person, strength of emr form source, type of modulation used (pulsed or unpulsed) etc. This is why it is only possible to provide information on what the emr exposure level will be by testing and measuring on site.

Measurements are taken and comparisons with precautionary European Building Biology Guidelines are made. Australian exposure standards set high levels of exposure that are deemed as safe but this is an area of much debate and controversy. We have been conducting measurements for many years and have found that exposure to much lower levels of radiation / energy than the Australian exposure standards can give rise to adverse health effects. Sometimes solutions are cheap and very easy to implement and sometimes they are expensive and more difficult to implement. So much depends on the level of exposure and the length of exposure time.

A qualified Building Biologist is well placed to take EMR measurements and offer advice based on the precautionary principle to ensure exposure is minimised or elimanated altogether.
